My July Ipsy Bag Review

July Ipsy Bag Review

ipsy bag july

It’s here! I am always eager for my monthly IPSY bag to arrive and this month is no exception. For the few days–numerous times a day–that precede its arrival I track my bag  from North Carolina to Kentucky to Georgia (counter-intuitive, I know) until it arrives in my mail box in all its splendor!

If you are not familiar with Ipsy, it is a monthly cosmetic and beauty product subscription service created by YouTube’s Michelle Phan. What I love about Ipsy is that for a steal-of-a-deal, $10 a month , I get to be surprised with an ever-changing make-up bag of goodies that is delivered every four weeks or so.

I am often impressed with the variety and quality of both the products and the bags themselves.

July’s bag, aptly named Beach Beauty, is a pink cylindrical makeup bag that is about 6 inches in length, just big enough to store all of my daily essentials and is filled with items that can be used to create hot summer looks.

THE BREAKDOWN

Pop Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon in Fuchsia Flirt

This creamy lip product is definitely flirty but not what I would consider fuchsia. Barbie pink, bubble gum pink, both of these descriptions apply but there is no hint of purple that I can detect. The Pop Crayon feels moisturizing and there is adequate color pay-off but on my mildly chapped lips the application leaves something to be desired. The company website sells a six-pack of crayons for $25.00, averaging out to over $4 a color. I was surprised that the price is as high as that. Compared with Revlon’s balm stains, which usually go for $7 or $8 dollars each, the cost isn’t exorbitant but these do not have anywhere near the quality in application or what I imagine will be the longevity compared with those balms. I will not be purchasing that kit even with the 20% coupon that Pop offers along with their product in this month’s bag.

Benefit Benetint Rose-tinted lip and cheek stain

I am most excited to receive this item (although not as excited as I would be if it were full-size 😉 ). Once upon a time, my sister gifted me one of Benefit’s lip and cheek stains. Not knowing the glory that is Benefit, I unwisely exchanged it at Sephora for something unmemorable. Big mistake. But now the universe has sent it back to me. At 2.5 ML the sample size is 1/5th the size of the actual product; considering the original is $30 I am psyched to have it. As the name suggests, this item can be used as a lip or cheek stain (or even, if I understand Benefit’s website correctly…. a nipple stain,). The color can be applied sheer or built up to have a bigger impact. Welcome to my life, Benetint, I am so happy to have you!

***Benefit also offers a free gift with $35 purchase for subscribers until August 15th ***

Coola Mineral Sunscreen, unscented moisturizer (SPF 20)

Not so stoked about this one. Yay, moisture and yay, protection from the sun and all that but if you are like me, you have a stash of sample SPF moisturizers stowed away in the bath room. That being said, I do like that this moisturizer is chemical-free, organic, recycle friendly, and cruelty free. It is also unscented and doesn’t feel greasy or heavy on the skin. I will probably use this for travel when my Cetaphil sample runs out. The Coola sample at 7ml compares with the original’s 50ml which costs $36. After viewing the website I feel a little more enthusiastic about the quality (read: this junk is expensive so now I like it more!).

***30% coupon offered through the end of the month, not even two weeks from now***

Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray

This one is pretty exciting to me. I have wanted to try a beach hair spray for a while and this one promises to be conditioning and texturizing. I sprayed it on my damp hair this morning before twisting it up in a chignon for work and now that I am home and have let my hair down, I am pleased with the texture of my hair which is wavy but I can’t tell if that comes from the spray or letting it dry while twisted back on my head. I’m happy either way. I also enjoy the scent which reminds me of the beach. Sample size is 50ml, a shocking 1/3 of the full-size product—AWESOME! The original retails for $19.95

***coupon code for $5 off $25 at Ulta through August 15th***

BH Cosmetics California Collection eye shadow sampler

I have been itching to try BH cosmetics since I heard a friend raving about a pallet she purchased. Since then I have been checking out the website and debating on whether or not I should try out a pallet myself. Long story short, I ordered a pallet last night. That should go to show my favorable impression of this sampler. Contained in a magnetic-closure mini-pallet are three nicely pigmented eye shadows. The first one, labeled Hollywood, is a deep purple shade that is almost matte, save the tiny amount of shimmer reflecting off of it. The next, San Francisco (are you seeing a theme here?), is a golden, shimmery brown that looks like the sun-tanned lovechild of MAC’s Woodwinked and Urban Decay’s Smog. WIN! The last color, Malibu, is a shimmering lemony gold. Of the three, Hollywood is the least pigmented but can easily be built up for the swatch on my hand although I’m sure that once I pop a primer underneath it will really show. On the BH website, single colors sell for $1.95 but from what I can tell these colors are exclusive to the California palettes.

***10% off California Collection palettes through the end of August***

LONG STORY SHORT

I really dig my Beach Beauty bag. 3 of the 5 products have been on my wish list so I am jazzed to finally call them my own. The other two I could take or leave but the amount of loot I received for $10 is crazy. I estimate that this bag’s value is around $27 not including the opportunity to save money should I utilize the coupons before they expire.

Thanks Ipsy, I already can’t wait for my next delivery!
